Prospect Watch: Sugar Land jumped out to an early lead and held off the Chihuahuas in El Paso Friday night. … Veteran utilityman Nick Solak started at designated hitter and had a pair of singles and a run scored. Solak hit .352 in May, and he’s off to an 8-for-18 start (.444 average) in June. He’s been remarkably consistent wherever he’s played in his first season in the Padres organization. He has a .933 OPS at home and a .943 OPS on the road. … Clay Dungan singled twice, drew a walk, and swiped his fifth base of 2026. Friday marked his first multi-hit game since he had three hits against Round Rock, more than two weeks ago on May 20. The 30-year-old brings defensive versatility and speed, but his bat has fallen off a bit this year. After producing an .816 OPS last year, Dungan currently sports a .734 OPS. … JP Sears made the start and got knocked around. The veteran southpaw lasted 3.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs on seven hits. He walked a pair and struck out five. The 30-year-old is in the midst of a particularly rough stretch – even by PCL standards. Over his last four starts, spanning 17.1 innings, he’s allowed a whopping 23 earned runs on 28 hits. Sears also has a walk rate over 10%, which far exceeds his results pitching for the A’s. While some grace should be given to pitchers who call the PCL home, Sears’ ERA after Friday stands at 7.62. … Ty Adcock completed his rehab assignment in Fort Wayne and was activated from the IL on Thursday. Friday, he got shelled in his first appearance with El Paso. The right-handed reliever, who signed a big league contract with the Padres early in the winter, walked three of the five hitters he faced, and was tagged for a two-run homer on the only ball put in play against him. The 29-year-old ran his fastball up to 97, but landed only 10 of his 27 pitches in the zone and Sugar Land simply waited him out, chasing only twice.

Prospect Watch: The Missions rode excellent pitching to a win against the Wind Surge in Kansas. … Miguel Mendez turned in his finest start of the season as he stretched out to five innings. The 23-year-old allowed just two hits, walking two and striking out four. Mendez missed two weeks at the end of April with a neck strain, and since returning, he’s built up slowly. The hard-throwing righty has looked especially sharp over his last two starts. He has not allowed a run over his last eight innings. Friday’s outing lowered his ERA to 3.90. … Eric Yost, who came off a three-week IL stint last week, followed Mendez as he builds up his pitch count. The 23-year-old righty worked two hitless innings, but threw just 22 of his 49 pitches for strikes as he walked five batters to match his career high. After posting single-digit walk rates through his first two-plus professional seasons, the 2023 17th-rounder has seen it spike to 17% since reaching San Antonio late last year. … Righty Johan Moreno tossed the final two innings to notch his third save of the season. He allowed one hit and struck out three. The 23-year-old Venezuelan is capable of running his fastball in the upper-90s, topping out at 99 mph this year. He’s had some issues with homers this season (four allowed in 25 innings), but he’s averaged more than a strikeout per inning while holding opposing batters to a .194 batting average. … Braedon Karpathios had a pair of singles in the win. After posting a .408 on-base percentage in May, the left-handed hitting outfielder is 5-for-13 with five walks in the first four games of the series.
Lake County Captains 11, TinCaps 8

Key Statistics: LF Justin DeCriscio 3-for-5, R, RBI; RF Jake Cunningham 3-for-5, 3 HR (13), 6 RBI; 1B Jack Costello 1-for-4, 3B; LHP Kash Mayfield 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; LHP Ryan Och 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R (1 ER), BB; RHP Clay Edmondson, 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB
Prospect Watch: The TinCaps jumped out to an early lead, but once again the pitching staff failed to keep the Captains at bay, and Fort Wayne dropped their third straight. Over the last three games, TinCaps pitching has allowed a staggering 38 runs. … Despite the loss, it was a historic night for Jake Cunningham. The TinCaps outfielder tied a club record by connecting on three homers. He had a solo shot, a two-run shot, and a three-run shot, driving in six runs. Cunningham now has 13 homers this season, which ranks second in the Midwest League, and his 1.011 OPS rankssixth. Cunningham’s power surge since signing as a minor league free agent over the winter is a stark contrast to his three seasons in the Baltimore system after they drafted him in the fifth round. The North Carolina native had just eight homers in 182 games. While he continues to strike out at an alarming 30.1% clip, he’s developing into a name to watch as a 23-year-old. … After suffering through a career-worst start last week, Kash Mayfield bounced back some, but still endured a weird outing. Mayfield tossed five innings, allowed three runs on seven hits; all three of the runs he allowed were on solo homers. Coming into Friday’s game at Parkview Field, Mayfield had allowed just two homers in his previous nine starts. The conditions for Friday’s game were exceptionally favorable to hitters – the wind was blowing out to center field at 16 mph – so Mayfield did well to limit the damage. … Justin DeCriscio had three hits and drove in a run. The former USD infielder has a .802 OPS in 19 games since being promoted to Fort Wayne. … Through his first 22 innings this year, Clay Edmondson had allowed only one earned run and three extra-base hits. Friday, Lake County jumped the sidearmer for three earned runs as he recorded only two outs. Edmondson walked two batters in a game for the first time all year, then compounded the damage by allowing his first two home runs of the season. Even with the meltdown, his ERA for the year now sits at 1.59.
Storm 9, Fresno Grizzlies 4

Kruz Schoolcraft continues to rebound from early-season struggles. (Photo: Robert Escalante)
Prospect Watch: The Storm got a pair of homers and rode excellent starting pitching to their second straight win in Fresno. … Kruz Schoolcraft earned his first professional win by tossing a career-high five innings in the victory. He allowed just one run on four hits. He struck out three, and for the first time in his professional career, did not issue a walk. The 19-year-old lefty had a pair of nightmarish outings to start the season, but he’s gradually gotten better since. His fastball command looked particularly sharp on Friday, as it touched 97 mph a few times. Schoolcraft lowered his season ERA to 6.98 with the victory. … Ryan Wideman had three hits, including a double. He also drove in a pair of runs. The 22-year-old outfielder has gone 8-for-17 over his last four games and ranks eighth in the league with a .319 batting average. … Kerrington Cross had a pair of hits, including his team-leading eighth homer of the season to extend his on-base streak to 23 games. The 24-year-old former Cincinnati Bearcat, who signed for $20,000 in the seventh round of the draft last year, leads the Cal League with a 1.064 OPS. Since the start of May, he has reached base at a .500 clip and is slugging over .700. … Jose Verdugo had two hits, including his third homer of the season. The multi-hit game extended his hitting streak to 13 games. The 18-year-old started the streak hitting .232/.310/.286; as of Friday, his slash-line stands at .285/.350/.400. Verdugo’s power upside is a bit limited, as he is only slightly larger than his listed 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, but his excellent bat-to-ball skills make him a player to watch.
ACL Royals 3, ACL Padres 2
Key Statistics: 2B Luis De Leon, 2-for-4, SB (8); 1B Colton Vincent, 2-for-4, RBI; LF Cardell Thibodeaux, 1-for-4, R; RHP Daison Acosta, IP, 2 K; RHP Lan-Hong Su, 3 IP, 5 K; LHP Adler Cecil, 2.1 IP, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Lan-Hong Su has impressed in his first professional season.. (Photo: Jerry Espinoza)
Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres squandered several strong pitching performances and lost on a walk-off to the Royals. … Righty Daison Acosta made his first official appearance in the organization, beginning a rehab assignment by striking out two of the three batters he faced. Acosta, 27, signed a big league deal over the winter after pitching in Double-A for the Nationals organization last season. Ultimately, the Padres outrighted him to Triple-A, and he went unclaimed on waivers during spring training. Acosta should give the organization another hard-throwing depth relief option once he works back into shape. He’s been on the 60-day IL, so he will likely progress slowly. … Lan-Hong Su followed Acosta and pitched three perfect innings, striking out five hitters in the process. The 19-year-old has looked dominant in his professional debut. In 10 innings, he’s allowed just one earned run while racking up 13 strikeouts. Because he already had some high-level international experience in Taiwan, he will likely see some action in Lake Elsinore later this year … Colton Vincent started at first base and had a pair of singles. The 26-year-old was on the initial El Paso roster but has spent a lot of time on the development list, as an able-bodied player ready to go in case a full-season club needs a catcher. The 26-year-old, who has spent four seasons in the Padres organization after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State, was assigned out to Peoria earlier in the week. … Wyatt Hoffman, who opened the year on the 60-day injured list with a back injury, started his rehab assignment and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The 27-year-old will hope to get out to an affiliate before the draft.
